“Common Scenarios” and “Simple Questions” That Sumikawa from Sumikawa Liquor Store Finds Himself Thinking About During the O-chugen Season
Hello. This is Sumikawa from Sumikawa Liquor Store (s.grace).
We’re now in the middle of summer, and I’ve been receiving all sorts of feedback and inquiries. We’ve had many customers visit us again this year.
As I wrap gifts and write names on gift tags, there are a few “common summer gifting scenarios” and “simple questions” that pop into my head every year.
Today, I’d like to take it easy for a bit and share some of my musings with you.
Common Scenario #1: “What did I send last year…?”
This is the number one phrase I hear most often in the store (laughs).
“Ms. Sumikawa, what did I send to that person last year?”
Don’t worry! At Sumikawa Sake Shop, we carefully keep records of what our customers have sent to whom in the past.
When I tell them, “Last year it was the XX juice set,” seeing the look of relief on their face as they say, “Oh, that’s right! Well, maybe I’ll go with beer this year,” is actually a secret pleasure of mine.
Common Scenario #2: “Something I wouldn’t buy for myself, but would be thrilled to receive”—finding that perfect balance
This is the perspective we often recommend to customers who are wondering, “What should I send to make them happy?”
It’s something you wouldn’t normally buy for yourself, but when you receive it as a gift, you get excited and think, “Wow, I’ve been wanting to try this (or drink this)!”
Premium juice you’ll want to savor one bottle at a time
High-quality seasonings or carefully crafted local sake
Carefully crafted mizu-yokan or somen noodles—a welcome treat on a hot summer day
Gifts that make you think, “Is this too extravagant?” often turn out to be the biggest surprise for the recipient.
Our Question #1: “Ultimately, how long should you keep sending gifts?”
When we consult with customers about O-chugen gifts, a very common question we hear is, “The recipient is getting older—maybe it’s time we both stop exchanging gifts?”
Knowing when to stop is really difficult, isn’t it?
Personally, I don’t think there’s any need to force yourself to keep sending extravagant gifts. For example, you could switch to slightly smaller gifts, or include a short note saying, “Thank you as always.”
O-chugen isn’t just a “exchange of goods”—it’s a once-a-year way to check in on each other’s well-being, like asking, “Are you doing well this year?” and replying, “We’re doing just fine here.”
Common Scenario #3: I even picture the recipient’s “family structure” and “what their grandchildren look like”
Running a business in Yoshiga Town and the surrounding areas, I don’t just picture the recipient’s face—I can instantly visualize the scene at their home: “That family’s grandchildren are coming home for summer vacation, so a juice set would be perfect,” or “That couple loves sake, so I’ll go with a junmai sake that tastes great chilled.”
I feel that this ability to “choose gifts within a relationship where I can picture the recipient” is a warm, unique joy that comes only from running a liquor store in a depopulated, rural area.
Summary: Mid-Summer Gifts Are the Very “Time” Spent Thinking of the Recipient
The time spent flipping through a catalog, wondering “Which one should I choose?” while picturing the recipient’s happy face—I believe that time itself is already a wonderful gift.
“I have absolutely no idea what to give!” “I want to check last year’s gift history!” “I’d like to send a rare local sake.”
When you find yourself in situations like these, please feel free to stop by Sumikawa Sake Shop.
We’d be happy to help you express your “spirit of giving”!
We are closed every Tuesday. We’re open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
